Janie Lutton
My favorite teacher at Col-Hi was Miss Carlton. I was told she was very hard, yet I found that she loved to see students excel and she enjoyed those that tried. I don't think I feared any of the faculty at Col-Hi. We were all lucky to have good teachers and an excellent public education.

I am not currently married. I am a widow (gulp), that is hard to say. I was married to Vernon W. Voorhees II, attorney and executive businessman for 36 years. He died October 14, 2000 of esophageal cancer at age 57. He was my best friend. I miss him still. My family consists of Sarah Voorhees, married to Michael Turpin, 2 grandsons (actually my boyfriends), Will, 9 and Jack, 5, in San Jose, CA and Kate Voorhees, Bellingham, WA.

We all get together at least twice a year for traveling. My photo is from New Year's Eve 2008 in Maui, Hawaii. We are in a restaurant in an open window right across from the Pacific Ocean. Awesome!!!

I received my BFA from KU in '64, and my MA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in '85. I'm sure that none of you would ever guess that I have had 5 solo art shows in New York, nor would you believe that I have been to Europe numerous times to printmaking workshops and traveled to Africa to teach art in an orphanage. Yet to be accomplished: travel to China and South America. I would love to do a triathlon, but that may be a bit too hopeful. After my first degree, I worked at Hallmark (wonderful job), after I had kids, I freelanced from home. And after I finished my masters, I started working for the Kansas City Art Institute part-time teaching painting and printmaking and still do - love it!! What I have learned from life over the years is not to take yourself too seriously.

(Note from the editor: Janie has received several honors and recognition, her work can be found in many publications, and she has had many exhibitions including the one that is keeping her from coming to the reunion..) See some of her art at: http://www.jvoorhees.com/
