Band Trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida - 1959
Miss America 1959, Mary Ann Mobley on her float
OK, so, 50 (check that, gang) 50 YEARS ago, (2009) I was at the Orange Bowl. At that time it was played in the afternoon. Mary Ann Mobley was Miss America that year, and she was there for the half-time show. Oklahoma played Syracuse. The Big Red versus the Orangemen. OU WON!! We (the College-HIgh School Wildcat Marching Band) performed at an event called the "Fire Pageant" which was a couple of nights before New Year's. The "King Orange" parade was on New Year's Eve, and was televised. At the end the parade, members of the OU marching band (which had finished the parade route before we did) fell in and marched with us to the end. After the ride back to the Marlin Beach hotel, in Fort Laurdale, where we stayed, various of us band members toddled down to the "Elbo Room" bar and grill and inspired the whole clientele of which to sing "Oklahoma". OK, probably other band members might not have the same memories. But those are mine, and I'm sharing them with you.
